Walter M. Desher of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania died Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at Wesley Enhanced Living Pennypack Park. He was 100 years old. Walter was born May 29, 1924 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of the late John Walter Desher and the late Ida B. Desher (nee - Bloom). He is the he is the husband of the late Eleanor (nee Pitts) Desher. He is the loving father of Nancy L. Desher. Grandfather of Cheyenne Desher and her husband Teddy Simon. Brother of Doris Desher.

Walter was born, raised, and educated in Philadelphia. He graduated from Overbrook High School in 1942 and attended Drexel University.  On May 29, Walt celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends.  He was employed for 44 years as a programmer at the Veterans Administration from 1948 until his retirement in 1994. He was a computer specialist and an expert in a language called 7080 auto coder.  Many of the insurance programs were originally written in that language. He also worked on COBOL programs. He was very well liked by his co-workers and was a very dedicated, dependable worker. After he retired, he was called back as an annuitant.  He also volunteered for many organizations. He was a kind and compassionate person. He was a long time member of Bethany United Church of Christ, a member of the Bethany Dart League and Friends of Tookany Creek.

Relatives and friends were invited to his viewing on Friday, August 16, 2024 from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. and funeral service at 10:00 A.M. at Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 419 Huntingdon Pike, Rockledge, PA 19046. His graveside service followed at Northwood Cemetery, 1501 Haines Street, Philadelphia, PA 19126.

Religious services were conducted by Rev. Dr. Jack Fletcher Price.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to ASPCA, 520 8th Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10018 or Wilderness Society, 1801 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Suite 200, Washington, DC 20006.
