Thelma Townsend of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania died Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Philadelphia Protestant Home. She was 102 years old. Thelma was born October 31, 1916 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late George Federer and the late Aurilla Federer (nee - Munshower). She is the wife of the late Harry Townsend and the late Earl Elwell. Beloved mother of Daniel Elwell and his wife Jessie, Linda T. Stute and her husband William, and the late Kenneth E. Elwell; sister of Dolores and the late Ralph, the late Frederick, the late Ethel, and the late George. She is also survived by her many grandchildren, great grand children, and great great grandchildren.

Thelma was born and raised in Philadelphia and operated a “Townsends” corner grocery store at Rising Sun Avenue and Clarkson Street for a number of years. She also worked at Sears and Roebuck from 1971 until her retirement in 1984 handling catalog distribution.

Relatives and friends were invited to her viewing on Saturday, December 8, 2018 from 9:30 A.M. and funeral service at 10:30 A.M. at the chapel of Philadelphia Protestant Home, 6500 Tabor Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19111. Her graveside service followed at Oakland Cemetery, Adams and Ramona Avenues, Philadelphia, PA 19124.

Religious services were conducted by Rev. Dr. Jack Fletcher Price, chaplain of Philadelphia Protestant Home, 6500 Tabor Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19111 and Rev. Marie Tracy, chaplain at Compassus Care Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Philadelphia Protestant Home Benevolent Fund, 6500 Tabor Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19111.
