Dr. Edgar H. Schuster of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania died Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at his residence. He was 81 years old. Ed was born April 7, 1930, the son of the late Howard Schuster and the late Marie Schuster (nee - Schueler).

He is the beloved husband of the late Nancy P. Schuster (nee - Pence). Father of William Schuster and his wife Francie, Nina Allred and her husband Charles and Claire Schuster. Grandfather of Nicholas Allred, Whitney Schuster, Corey Allred, Laurel Schuster, Gerald Fittipaldi and Justin Fittipaldi.

Ed was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and was raised and educated in Philadelphia. He graduated in 1948 from Frankford High School in the city, where he was a member of the honorary society for boys, the 13 Club, and won a gold medal in the mile relay event at the Penn Relays. He received his undergraduate degree from Columbia College in New York in 1952, where he was a member of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. Ed earned his Masters Degree from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1962 and received a Doctoral Degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973, where he had a University Scholarship at the Graduate School of Arts and Science.

During his working career Ed was an author, editor, and teacher of English, Linguistics, creative writing and literary criticism.

As an author, he wrote many textbooks for both teachers and students, including titles such as American English Today and A Modern Approach to Language Study. His latest book, Breaking the Rules: Liberating Writers through Innovative Grammar Instruction, is in its seventh printing. He also wrote many articles for periodicals such as Education Week, English Journal, Whetstone Literary Quarterly and Phi Delta Kappan.

Ed worked as a co-editor for two and a half years of the Whetstone Literary Quarterly, which was first published in Philadelphia in 1955.

As a teacher, he taught English in secondary schools and colleges for more than forty years. He was a Master Teacher at the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University in 1960 and was the recipient of a Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1969. He taught creative writing at Lehigh University for ten years and taught English at Temple University and Beaver College (Arcadia University). He finished his career in education as the coordinator of the Language Arts Curriculum for the Allentown School District, retiring in 2001. He spoke frequently at national conferences, held various positions with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and was a long-term member of the Writing Assessment Advisory Committee for the state of Pennsylvania.

In his leisure time, he was a Bridge Bronze Life Master and Certified Bridge Teacher and took on clients for bridge lessons. He was a Sponsor Patron of the Metropolitan Opera and a member of the Concertmaster Circle of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

A memorial service for Ed will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 11th, 2011 at the Abington Friends Meeting, Meeting House Road and Greenwood Avenue, Jenkintown, PA 19046.
