Michael Holahan was born on September 3, 1958, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and raised in West Philadelphia. He married the love of his life, Julie, and the two became business partners and founded the Pennsylvania General Store in Reading Terminal Market in 1987. Michael and Julie became fixtures in the Market, which seemed to grow and flourish over the years along with the General Store. Its success led recently to opening of a second location in Chestnut Hill. Michael’s passion for Pennsylvania’s farmers, butchers, purveyors and cuisine found its expression in his authoring a book on Pennsylvania’s indigenous foods and his service as President of the Reading Terminal Market Merchants’ Association. Michael’s tenure as President is widely recognized as one of the most successful in the Market’s illustrious history. In addition to his work at his store and the Market, Michael was a dedicated member of Gloria Dei Church in Huntingdon Valley, where he served as Vice President of the Church Counsel and was involved in many youth ministry activities. On Sunday, March 13, 2016, Michael preached his first sermon, which focused on the importance and power of community.
Michael was a loving husband to Julie and father to their sons, William and James, and their daughter, Isabella. Michael was the son of Marie Rice (remarried to Keith Rice) and Joseph Holahan (remarried to Cassie Holahan); brother to Joe and David Holahan and their sister, Kristen; stepbrother to Margaret, Janet, Lynne, Susan, Keith (deceased), Jeanne, Andrew, Maureen, Christine, Colleen.
Relatives and friends were invited to his visitation on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. and to his memorial service on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at Gloria Dei Church, 570 Welsh Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006 www.gloriadei.com.
