Byard F. Brogan, Jr. of Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania died Friday, April 29, 2016 at Foulkeways At Gwynedd. He was 85 years old. Byard was born January 20, 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of the late Byard F. Brogan and the late Elizabeth A. Brogan (nee - Swiler). He was the beloved husband of the late Paula B. Brogan (nee Borz); father of Katherine Brogan and Byard F. Brogan, III and his wife Laura; grandfather of Grace, Kate, and Byard F. Brogan, IV; and husband of the late Grace Myrick Brogan.

Byard was born, raised, and educated in Philadelphia where he graduated from Episcopal Academy in 1949. After graduation, Byard went to work with his father at the family jewelry manufacturing company. During his early work years, Byard continued his education by taking business classes at the Wharton School of Business and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania. He also served in the Army Medical Service Corps from 1954-1957. Byard would eventually go on to become the owner and President of Byard F. Brogan, Inc. The company was located on Sansom Street in Philadelphia, then 8th and Walnut streets and finally moved to its current location in Glenside, just outside of Philadelphia, in 1966. Byard retired after 60 years of dedication to his customers and employees. The company served many of the country’s most prestigious retailers. Through his work, thousands upon thousands of heirlooms bearing his name and the “Brogan B” trademark now exist across the country.

Byard met his first wife Grace Myrick in the 1960s. The couple was married in 1969 and welcomed their son Byard, III in 1972. After Grace passed away in 1979, Byard cared for Byard, III during what his son lovingly refers to as, “the bachelor years.” Byard met Paula Borz through mutual friends and the couple married in 1983. In 1985, they welcomed their daughter Katherine. They remained married until Paula’s death in 2014.

Byard’s free time was often spent working outside and maintaining houses in Florida, Delaware, the Endless Mountains region of Pennsylvania, and Maryland. He particularly enjoyed time spent at the family home in Gwynedd Valley as well as on the Eastern shore of Maryland. Byard was a sportsman and a dog lover. He enjoyed many traditional outdoor pastimes, and loved cars, boats, photography, and spending time on the water. Byard was both creative and mechanically inclined and could build or repair just about anything.

Byard will be remembered for his selfless commitment throughout his life to caring for his mother, father, Grace, Paula, and his children. A compassionate, selfless, and patient man; Byard was the consummate gentleman.

Relatives and friends were invited to his visitation on Saturday, May 7, 2016 from 10:00 A.M. and funeral service at 11:00 A.M. at Church of the Messiah, 1001 Dekalb Pike, Lower Gwynedd, PA 19002. His graveside service and military honors rendered by the United States Army followed at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, 215 Belmont Avenue, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004.

Religious services were conducted by The Rev. Carl E. Metzger.
