The following tribute was written by Dorthy’s family:
On Thursday, June 23, 2016, Dorothy Jay passed away peacefully of natural causes, at the home of her nephew, Charles William Jay, in Line Lexington, PA. Dorothy was the matriarch of the Jay family for her nieces and nephews, and was known by many as "Aunt Dot". She lived a full and humble life for 99 years, 4 months, and 18 days.
Dorothy was born in Philadelphia, PA on February 5, 1917. She was the first of two children born to James William Jay and Vernia Blanche (Faux) Jay. Dorothy's brother, Burke W. Jay, of Hatboro, PA, preceded her in death in 1996; as well as a sister-in-law, Lillian Elizabeth (McFadden) Jay in 1988; and a grand-niece, Chelsea Elizabeth Jay, in 1991.
In 1934 Dorothy graduated from Palmyra High School (NJ), where she was voted "Brightest" in her class. After school she was employed as a Bookkeeper, and became a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Personal Finance Companies. Dot was active in her community as a member of the Palmyra Junior Women's Club from 1936-1945, during which time she also studied the piano at the YMCA School of Music in Philadelphia, as well as under the tutelage of the Marjorie Chloe Wilson Music Studio. In 1942 she was trained by the American Red Cross as a Nurse's Aide, and served her country until the end of WWII as part of the Burlington County (NJ) Chapter.
After her father passed away in 1948, Dorothy and her mother moved to Kendallville, IN, where they lived on the Faux family farm. She was employed by Industrial Engineering & Mfg. Company as Comptroller, and Secretary of the Board of Directors. Dot also served as Treasurer of the Brimfield Methodist Church and was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club.
During the early 1960's Dorothy and her mother moved to Hatboro, PA, to be closer to her brother, Burke, and his family. Dot received a diploma in Advanced Accounting from the International Accountant's Society in April 1962, and was employed at Penn Elastic Company in West Point, PA, as a Bookeeper, until her retirement in 1985.
Dorothy had a close relationship with her Lord, and was a member of the Church of the Advent in Hatboro, having researched and written extensively about the history of the church. She had a passion for reading, which led her to volunteer at the Union Library of Hatboro for many years, until she could no longer drive there. She loved her adopted town of Hatboro, and was a member of The Neighbors of Hatboro, until they disbanded in 2000.
Dorothy had many hobbies, including sewing, reading, traveling, playing the piano, attending the theater, and most of all, oil painting. Dot enjoyed sharing her masterpieces with her family and friends, and those who received her gifts are blessed to have her beautiful expressions gracing their walls.
Aunt Dot was loved and is survived by her niece, Dorothy Lillian Jay, Plymouth Meeting, PA; nephew, J. William Jay, and his wife, Robyn Madara Jay, Bloomsburg, PA; niece Barbara Elizabeth (Jay) Mabey, and her husband, Timothy Kevin Mabey, East Greenville, PA; nephew Charles William Jay, and his wife, Sue, Line Lexington, PA; grand-nephews Michael Jay, Christopher Jay and Cody Jay, and great-grand nephews Gunner Jay and Jaxon Jay.
Family and friends were welcome to join in a celebration of Dorothy's life on Saturday, July 2, 2016, at 1:30 pm, at Church of the Advent, 12 Byberry Road, Hatboro. Parking is found on Rorer Avenue behind Hatboro Federal Bank.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Church of the Advent, or to a charity of your choice.
