Houston J. Chasteen of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania died Friday, July 15, 2016 at Temple University Hospital. He was 57 years old. Houston was born March 2, 1959 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of the late Hilda Mont. He is the beloved husband of Kathy Chasteen (nee- Gillich); brother of Aquanetta “Nicky” Tospale and her husband James, the late Bertha “Penny” Umble and her husband the late John Umble; uncle of William Topsale and godfather of Haynes Topsale, Darren Umble and his wife Joyce, Sonya Umble, and great uncle of Gabrielle Wright. He is also survived by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Harry Gillich and his wife Marian, and brothers-and sisters-in-laws Harry Gillich and his wife Becky, John Gillich and his wife Janet, and Laura Focht and her husband Brian, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Houston was born and raised in the Holmesburg neighborhood of Philadelphia and a Class of 1977 graduate of Lincoln High School. After his initial education, he attended several years of college at both Millersville University and Temple University. Houston was gregarious and outgoing, able to make friends quickly, both in social and professional settings. He met Kathy Gillich while the two were working together, and they began dating on July 5, 1985. The couple was married on June 5, 1993, a date that was selected to celebrate his mother’s birthday. In his free time, Houston was an avid sports fan, especially rooting for the San Francisco 49ers.
Relatives and friends were invited to his viewing on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 from 8:30 A.M. and funeral service from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Holmesburg, 8101 Erdrick Street, Philadelphia, PA 19136 www.mtzionbaptist.org. His graveside service followed at White Chapel Gardens, 140 West Street Road, Feasterville, PA 19053.
Religious services were conducted by Rev. Scott Dorsey from Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Holmesburg.
