Solon David Morgan, PhD of Oreland, Pennsylvania died Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at his home. He was 98 years old. Solon was born January 18, 1918 in Athens, Georgia, son of the late Flemon E.D. Morgan and the late Cora Morgan (nee - Houze). He is the beloved husband of the late Carol Williams Morgan; loving father of Gail Morgan Roberts and her husband Steve, and Thomas W. Morgan. Solon was predeceased by his siblings Kenimer H. Morgan PhD, Floyd W. Morgan MD, and Reba Robena Morgan. He is also survived by her loving nieces and nephews.
Solon grew up in Macon, Georgia where he received his Bachelors degree from Mercer University. He continued his studies with graduate degrees from Yale and The New School for Social Research in New York City. Solon received his PhD from The Wharton School - University of Pennsylvania. Solon’s career began as a Unitarian Pastor of churches in Middleborough, Massachusetts and Flushing, New York. He met Carol Williams, a daughter of the local funeral director, while serving as Pastor in Flushing. Carol and Solon were married November 1, 1952 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Flushing. They were happily married until Carol’s passing on September 23rd of this year. Solon passed away on their 64th wedding anniversary.
Solon was a professor at Drexel University for 38 years. After his retirement, he continued to teach at Philadelphia University, Cabrini College, Arcadia University and the University of the Sciences. His main subjects were Operations Management, Small Business Management, Basic Management and Statistics. Solon was dedicated to giving his students the best education they could get anywhere. In his free time, Solon enjoyed sitting on his porch in Avalon, NJ in the sea breeze reading and was very devoted to his dogs. A lifelong learner, Solon was an avid reader of the Wall Street Journal and enjoyed watching the news to stay current. Solon was musically talented and could play pieces by ear. He played a number of instruments, including piano and guitar, and enjoyed playing with friends. Over the years, he occasionally played at events for organizations with which he was involved.
Relatives and friends were invited to his memorial service on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 11:30 A.M. at St. Thomas’ Church, Whitemarsh, 610 Church Road, Fort Washington, PA 19034 www.stthomaswhitemarsh.org.
