Robert J. Cameron of Cape May Courthouse, New Jersey died Thursday, November 10, 2016 at his home. He was 87 years old. Robert was born September 9, 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of the late James Cameron and the late Edythe Cameron (nee - Howell). He is the beloved husband of Yvonne (nee Hershey) Cameron; father of Stephen R. Cameron, James G. Cameron, and Lynn Cirigliano; grandfather of Jessica, Christine, and Joseph Cirigliano, Sara Groome, Jenny and Natalie Cameron, and Stephen and James Cameron; great grandfather of Abi, Matt, and Keegan.
Robert was born, raised, and educated in Philadelphia, PA where he attended Northeast High School for Boys. After school, he joined the United States Army and served honorably until his discharge from active duty in March of 1953. During his time in the Army, his army buddies gave him the nickname "Lightening" for his very slow, cautious, and careful way of going behind the enemy lines to be sure the coast was clear for the troops to advance in the attack. Upon his return home, Robert met Yvonne Hershey while she was sitting on her stoop. It was love at first sight and the two were married in January of 1955 in Elkton, MD. He completed his reserve service time with the Army and was discharged in September of 1960 with the rank of Corporal.
Robert started his working career as a pin setter at the Neighborhood Bowling Alley on Broad Street where he became an avid and exceptional bowler. Robert later started his career as a machinist for Nabisco on Roosevelt Boulevard in northeast Philadelphia. He retired after 44 years with the company in 1991. Then, he and Yvonne moved to Cape May Courthouse, NJ and enjoyed spending summers with their grandchildren. In his free time, Robert enjoyed fishing, swimming, floating in the ocean, and his trips to the racetrack to earn his nickname “Show Bet Bob”.
