The following was composed by Marian’s family:

Marian Dorothy Layman (nee Stroup) was called to her heavenly home on Friday, May 22, 2026 at Wesley Enhanced Living Pennypack Park. She was 94 years old.  Marian was born on April 25, 1932 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Lewis W. Stroup and the late Bertha A. Stroup (nee Pfeffer).  She was the beloved wife of the late Charles H. Layman; mother of Barbara Dick and her husband Charles, Mark Layman and his wife Donna, Beverly Robnett and her husband Michael, and Charles "Chip" Layman and his wife Theresa; grandmother of Evan Dick and his wife Rachael, Benjamin Dick and his wife Kate, Elizabeth and Samantha Layman, Matthew, Daniel, and Jennifer Robnett, Heather Barg and her husband Robert, and Melissa Pierce and her husband Colton; great grandmother of Lily, Dylan, and Brandon Barg.

Marian was born, raised, and educated in Philadelphia.  She was a graduate of Olney High School, where her greatest joy was singing in the acapella choir under the direction of Mr. Theodore Nitsche.  After graduation, Marian went on to work as a clerk typist at Merck, Sharp and Dohme. She then went on to become a full time homemaker, which she considered her greatest joy and achievement. After raising her four children she returned to work, first as a teacher's aide at Cedar Grove Academy, and then as a law library assistant at both Reed Smith and Morgan Lewis in Center City, until her retirement in 2015 to care for Dad.

She continued singing with the Olney Graduate Choir for many years, and, as a long-time member of Cedar Grove Church, was a soloist, choir member, and the soprano voice of the beloved "Ladies Trio."  She valued the lifelong friendships of the women of the Crusaders Sunday School class. She served as a Pioneer Girl guide, and taught in Vacation Bible School for many years. She also enjoyed her participation in the Bright Horizons Fellowship. In her later years, worshiping at Bethany Baptist Church, she attended a weekly Bible study and served as a VBS aide. She was also a volunteer at Jeanes Hospital for several years.

Marian enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, faithfully attending school, sports, and musical events. She enjoyed trips to Cape May, shopping, and going out for a good meal, always checking out the dessert menu first!  She loved all types of music and particularly enjoyed singing along with her favorite cowboy, Gene Autry!

Beneath her quiet demeanor was a woman of incredibly strong faith. She prayed daily for each and every one of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren by name, as well as anyone else in need. She faithfully called and sent notes of encouragement to friends and family members going through difficult times. She frequently visited shut-ins, as well as loved ones in hospitals and nursing homes.

Now in her heavenly home, she has undoubtedly heard the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant!"

Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation on Wednesday, June 3, 2026 from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. and funeral service at 11:00 A.M. at Wesley Enhanced Living Pennypack Park, 8401 Roosevelt Boulevard, Philadelphia, PA 19152. Interment will be private.

Religious services will be conducted by Rev. Daniel J. Price and Rev. Brian Cox.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Wesley Enhanced Living Pennypack Park - Benevolent Fund, 8401 Roosevelt Boulevard, Philadelphia, PA 19152 www.wel.org.
