Mary Ellen Herger of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania died Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at the Philadelphia Protestant Home. She was 91 years old. Mary was born January 20, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Harry Leroy Brunner and the late Viola Smith Brunner (nee - Batman). She is the beloved wife of the late Carl Herger; sister of Dr. John W. Brunner, the late David Brunner, and the late Anna Brunner; aunt of Barbara Borgia, Diane Alexander, Paul Brunner, Karin Nadig, Kirstin Martinez, Inge Brunner, Erika Brunner, and Bjoern Brunner. She is also survived by 8 great nieces and nephews and 3 great great nieces and nephews.
Mary Ellen was born, raised, and educated in Philadelphia. She grew up on Russell Street behind Temple University and graduated from Simon Gratz High School. She continued her education with a degree from Temple School of Nursing becoming a Registered Nurse. She worked as an Orthopedic Scrub Nurse at Temple Hospital, Jeanes Hospital and Einstein Hospital. Mary Ellen and Carl were married in 1965 and moved into their new home on Veree Road where she would stay after the sudden passing of Carl in 1968. Mary Ellen was an active member of St. Matthews United Church of Christ, Salem Zion United Church of Christ, and Gloria Dei Church. She enjoyed traveling and enjoyed visiting Panama, Alaska, Sweden, Norway, Israel, Afghanistan, England, and Italy. She was very creative and enjoyed Photography, jewelry making, sewing, knitting, crocheting, weaving, and gardening. Mary Ellen enjoyed singing alto in her church choir and was a lover of her four legged friends: Timmy, Fritzi, Tasha, Pima, and especially her beloved Jack Russell, Muffin.
Relatives and friends were invited to her visitation on Thursday, January 24, 2019 from 10:30 A.M. and memorial service at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel at Gloria Dei Church, 570 Welsh Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006. Her graveside service followed at Gloria Dei Church.
Religious services were conducted by Rev. Donna Wright from Gloria Dei Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Philadelphia Protestant Home Benevolent Fund, 6500 Tabor Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19111.
