Natalie D. Barbano of Horsham, Pennsylvania died Friday, August 31, 2018 at her home. She was 88 years old. Natalie was born August 10, 1930 in Glenside, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Michael D’Elia and the late Lucy D’Elia (nee - Lacivita). She is the beloved wife of Edward F. Barbano Sr.; mother of Donna Barbano and her husband Robert Leggat, Edward F. Barbano Jr. and his wife Susan G., and Terry Burke and her husband John Jr.; grandmother of Patrick Barbano, Lauralee Barbano-Maritt, Christine Burke, and John Burke III; great grandmother of Adriana Barbano, Michael Barbano, Lucy Maritt, and Jeremy Maritt; sister of the late Joseph M. D’Elia, Marian Sciandro and her husband, the late Louis and Margaret Roberts and her husband, the late William.

Natalie was born and raised in Glenside, Pennsylvania and was a 1948 graduate of Abington High School. She and Edward fell in love at their mutual friends’ wedding and were married in May of 1951. The loving couple made their home in Horsham, Pennsylvania, where they raised their children and resided for 67 years. Natalie’s first love was taking care of her family, however, she also worked outside the home as an administrative assistant at SPS and Yellow Book. Natalie and Edward were longtime members of St. Catherine of Siena Parish and Sandy Run Country Club.

Natalie was an avid golfer, a fabulous cook, and was happiest when entertaining family and friends. Always the epitome of grace and elegance, Natalie had an eye for fashion and was an accomplished seamstress, as exhibited by her beautiful and stylish wardrobe. However, her true beauty came from within and she will always be remembered as a faithful friend, a loving mother, an adoring grandmother and a devoted wife.

Relatives and friends were invited to her viewing on Monday, September 3, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 501 Easton Road, Willow Grove, PA 19090. Relatives and friends were also invited to her Funeral Mass on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 321 Witmer Road, Horsham, PA 19044. Her graveside service followed at Whitemarsh Memorial Park, 1169 Limekiln Pike, Ambler, PA 19002.

Religious services were conducted by Rev. Joseph F. Rymdeika from St. Catherine of Siena Church, 321 Witmer Road, Horsham, PA 19044.

The family is especially grateful to everyone who took such loving and compassionate care of Natalie during her long illness, especially the caregivers and staff of Bux-Mont Home Care and Liberty Hospice. The family also sends heartfelt thanks to relatives and friends for all their love
and support.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter, 399 Market Street, Suite 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106 or Liberty Hospice, 7002 Butler Pike, Ambler, PA 19002

Words of Remembrance from Christine Burke

To help prepare my thoughts to try and even capture how perfect Mom-Mom was, I asked all the grandkids, my cousins Patrick, Lauralee and my brother Johnny, each separately - to send five or so words they thought best described or reminded them of Mom-Mom. They, or perhaps more accurately she, made it really easy: they were essentially all exactly the same. And that speaks to what an exceptionally loving and caring wife, sister, Mother, grandparent, godparent, friend and person Mom-Mom was.

The easy ones first :

Thoughtful – one of the first thing that probably comes to mind for any of us is Mom-Mom’s cooking. No one can still perfect her meatballs because they were pure intuition. But she was the secret ingredient of every family meal and – the best part of her cooking was the thoughtfulness – Lauralee will always remember her making Mickey Mouse pancakes when we slept over as kids and for dessert, how we would go down to the freezer chest in the basement with plastic bags to choose from the any of the 5 to 10 gallons of ice cream she always had on hand to be sure everyone had their favorite. Just yesterday Claudia Cooper walked into the wake saying “She better have my coffee ice cream!” If she found out something was your favorite, she would be sure to always make or have it. She was also thoughtful about her own health, requesting her martinis shaken, not stirred, for the antioxidants.

Strong - Physically, Mom-Mom was healthy and active - an active power walker, Nordic tracker, golfer and fond of starting the day in Fort Myers with morning walks on the beach. When she would come to visit us I don’t think I’d see her sit until it was time for dinner – starting not long after she arrived to do all of our laundry. My dad often joked that the clothes he wore today were often cleaned folded back upstairs before the next day. But more importantly, she was mentally strong. She had knack for seeing what needed to be done, and just doing it, without gripe or recognition.

Happy - An infectiously joyous laugh that she could not contain, and endless positivity. Her advice was similarly positive, no matter the situation. None of us grandkids can remember a time she was not happy. Her constant positive outlook was just one of the reasons why I chose her as my sponsor for my Confirmation.

Style - sharp, elegant and on trend, I’ll never forget learning at a young age how she made herself a new outfit for their night on the town every weekend. Her exquisite abilities as a seamstress extended to her children whose clothes she made and were always in the latest styles, her grandchildren who had matching outfits every Christmas (down to Lauralee and my American girl dolls, complete with a change of matching nightgowns for when we got tired of being fancy) and she even made my first prom dress.

Grace - perhaps the best way to sum up all of the qualities above, her best accessory - was the grace she carried. It shone a light everywhere she went. Patrick said this was a tremendous example for us grandchildren and I could not agree more. Her grace is the trait I hope all of us will carry with us now that she is gone.

The grandparent grandchild relationship is often special and pure, but I think it’s safe to say that Mom-Mom treated everyone like her Grandchildren; her incredibly loving nature was for everyone who knew her and returned to her by husband and her children who persisted she had the utmost care in the final years of her life.

So, a Toast to Natalie, our angel who we are sure is in heaven, dressed to the nines enjoying a grey goose martini shaken, not stirred. May her grace always be with all of you.
