Joseph Abbonizio of Doylestown, Pennsylvania died Friday, December 14, 2018 at his home. He was 94 years old. Joe was born October 5, 1924 the son of the late Alphonso Abbonizio and the late Dominica Abbonizio (nee - Lancia). He is the beloved husband of the late Josephine Abbonizio; father of JoAnn Reinard and her husband Curt; grandfather of Joe and Curtis Reinard; brother of Rose Speigle, Jeanette Bomento, and Fred Abbonizio.
Joe was born, raised, and educated in Philadelphia where he attended Jules Mastbaum Vocational Technical School and Northeast High School. Joe met Jo Grendzola in 1942 at Carmen Roller Skating Rink, and while both enjoyed the dancing, neither of them particularly liked to skate. The couple fell in love and were married in 1946. After a period of living with Joe’s family in the North Hills neighborhood, the pair elected to move first to the Olney area of the city and finally settled into the Elkins Park area where they remained for more than 50 years. While in Elkins Park, the Abbonizios attended St. James’ Parish.
During his working career Joe was the owner and operator of Abbey’s Auto Service. He also ran an auto sales business. After he closed both of those companies, Joe ran yet another shop for starter and generator repair. He finally retired from work in the early 2000s.
Relatives and friends were invited to his viewing on Thursday, December 20, 2018 from 9:00 A.M. and Funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. at St. James Church, 8320 Brookside Road, Elkins Park, PA 19027. His graveside service followed at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 3301 West Cheltenham Avenue, Cheltenham, PA 19038.
Religious services were conducted by Rev. Edward A. Windhaus, pastor of St. James Church.
