Betty Marie Catherine Magiera of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania died Monday, January 14, 2019 at Lafayette Redeemer. She was 85 years old. Betty was born January 17, 1933 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Jacob Gobeler and the late Elizabeth Gobeler (nee - Ochse). She is the beloved wife of 57 years of the late John Magiera; devoted mother of Marie Hansen and Stephen Magiera and his wife Carol; loving grandmother of Craig Hansen, Kristen Rodriguez and her husband Michael, Karen Williams and her husband Walter, Stephen Magiera and his wife Rhianna, Michael Magiera, Daniel Magiera, and Matthew Magiera; loving great grandmother of Jacob Magiera and Johnathan Hansen.

Betty was born and raised in Philadelphia, residing in Huntingdon Park and Olney, and later in her life, raising her family in the Rhawnhurst neighborhood. She married the love of her life, John Magiera, on April 24, 1954 at the Tabor Lutheran Church. Their family life would be intimately intertwined with the church through organizations like the Girl Scouts, a group that was a constant fixture in Betty’s life from an early age, and Meals on Wheels. Later, the family would become longtime members of Gloria Dei Church and enjoy that familiar sense of community and dedication to service. Betty worked for and later retired from the Philadelphia School District as an Administrative Assistant, though her dream was always to be a teacher. In her 50s, she pursued higher education at Manor College and fulfilled a lifelong dream to achieve her Associate’s Degree. In retirement, Betty and John enjoyed traveling extensively and maintaining their close ties to organizations like the Girl Scouts.
