William E. Merkle of Gaines, Pennsylvania died Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Bradford County Manor. He was 80 years old. William was born October 14, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of the late Emil Merkle and the late Mary Merkle (nee - Arch). He is the beloved husband of the late Kathleen D. Merkle; father of Catherine, Maria, Eric, and the late William N. Merkle; grandfather of Joshua Hunter; brother of Eleanor Turner and her husband Will. He is also survived by a loving extended family. William was born, raised, and educated in Philadelphia. He and his wife were the very proud owners of PA Survival Products, a health food store on Oxford Avenue in Fox Chase for nearly 30 years, and later Cedar Mountain Springs, a spring water bottling company in Gaines, Pennsylvania. After retiring to Gaines, William spent his time managing the water plant and was very involved with the church community at St. Bibiana in nearby Galeton. Relatives and friends were invited to his viewing on Thursday, January 31, 2019 from 10:00 A.M. and funeral service at 11:00 A.M. at Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 419 Huntingdon Pike, Rockledge, PA 19046. His graveside service followed at St. John Neumann Cemetery, 3797 County Line Road, Chalfont, PA 18914. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to FSH Society, dedicated to the treatment and a cure of Muscular Dystrophy, 450 Bedford Street, Lexington, MA 02420.
