Thomas Francis "Tom" Flaherty, II of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at his home. He was 47 years old. Tom was born July 16, 1971 in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. He is the beloved son of Dolores J. “Dee” Gatward (nee DePretis) and the late Thomas F. Flaherty, Sr.; step son of the late Thomas Gatward; brother of John, Frank, and Greg Palumbo, Bridget Stein (nee Flaherty) and her husband Billy, Denise Quiarello and her husband Thomas, Ellen Titano and her husband Anthony, and the late Salvador J. Palumbo III. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews.

Tom was raised and educated in Philadelphia. He was a 1990 graduate of Cardinal Dougherty High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served in Somalia during Operation Restore Hope. He was discharged honorably in 1994. He went to work at the VA Hospital in Coatesville, PA, as a health technician, working with his fellow veterans. In his free time, Tom enjoyed flying radio controlled airplanes.

Relatives and friends were invited to his visitation on Monday, April 22, 2019 from 11:30 A.M. and Funeral Mass at 12:30 P.M. at St. Anselm Church, 12669 Dunks Ferry Road, Philadelphia, PA 19154. His graveside service followed with military honors rendered by the United States Navy at 2:30 P.M. at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, PA 18940.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to VA Medical Center, c/o volunteer services, 1400 Black Horse Hill Road, Coatesville, PA 19320. Please make checks payable to The Department of Veterans Affairs.
