Elizabeth C. "Bettie" McHugh of Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania died Friday, May 3, 2019 at Holy Redeemer Hospital Hospice. She was 85 years old. Bettie was born March 6, 1934 in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Joseph Crookes and the late Rosa Gladys Crookes (nee - Weiss). She is the beloved wife of the late Norman J. McHugh; mother of Diane Doerr and her husband Dave, Debra Sullivan and her husband Herb, Michael McHugh and his wife Dorie, John McHugh and his wife Maureen, Donna Argeros and her husband Bob, and Beth Gress and her husband Mike; grandmother of 17; great grandmother of 23.

Bettie graduated from Lower Merion High School. After graduation she took a position as an operator with Bell Telephone where she met Norman McHugh. It was “love at first sight.” The couple were married a few months later on May 29, 1954. They lived in the Kensington nieghborhood of Philadelphia and started their family. Ten years later they moved the family to Lawndale and Norm continued his work at Bell Telephone while Bettie raised the children. She also managed to fit being an “Avon Lady” in around her children’s schedules. Bettie and Norm enjoyed taking the children to the New Jersey shore to get away. In later years Bettie was actively involved in her grandchildren’s activities and especially liked attending their sports events and activities. Bettie and Norm moved to their current home in Huntingdon Valley in 2010.

While Bettie loved playing Bingo and making puzzles, she was primarily a people person. Bettie seemed to know and connect to people everywhere she went. She was very social and valued friendships with others and especially her family. Bettie had a special bond with her daughter Debbie and enjoyed and appreciated all of Debbie’s support, care, and assistance getting things done.

Relatives and friends were invited to her visitation on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. at Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 419 Huntingdon Pike, Rockledge, PA 19046.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, 5 Valley Square, Suite 210, Blue Bell, PA 19422.

Family flowers arranged by Blake Florist 215-379-8787.
