Mary Ellen Gibson of Doylestown, Pennsylvania died Monday, July 29, 2019 at her home, surrounded by her family. She was 74 years old. Mary Ellen was born November 3, 1944 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late George J. Hughes and the late Eleanor R. Hughes (nee - Anderson). She is the beloved wife of 54 years of Richard Gibson; mother of Maggie Scanlan and her husband Bradford, Maureen Reynolds, and Thomas Gibson and his wife Kimberly; grandmother of Ryan, Sean, Grace, and Hope Scanlan, Madison and Zoe Reynolds, and Jacob, Molly, and Ellie Gibson.

Mary Ellen was born, raised, and educated in the Elkins Park area of suburban Philadelphia. She graduated from St. James’ Parish School, then Mount Saint Joseph’s Academy, and pursued higher education in nursing school. Mary Ellen continued her close ties with St. James’ Parish as a longtime parishioner and married her husband of more than 50 years, Richard Gibson, in the same church.

During her working years, Mary Ellen’s nursing career was singularly focused on the care for the elderly at local nursing homes. In her spare time, she was a passionate and avid cook and lived for family, especially her grandchildren.

Relatives and friends were invited to her viewing on Monday, August 5, 2019 from 10:00 A.M. and Funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 235 East State Street, Doylestown, PA 18901. Her graveside service followed at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 3301 West Cheltenham Avenue, Cheltenham, PA 19038.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Fox Chase Cancer Center -Women’s Health Center, 333 Cottman Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19111.
