The following story was composed by John’s stepdaughter Debbie Cava.

Our "Papa John" left us last week to be with the Lord. He was in the ICU and battled hard for a month and a half. He passed away peacefully last Thursday.

He was an amazing stepdad to me, and Grandpa (Papa John) to my kids. He also raised 3 beautiful kids of his own in CA and I am especially grateful to Tara, who is the best stepsister anyone could ask for.

He worked 2 jobs simultaneously in his younger years as a high school teacher by day and, an officer for the LAPD by night to provide for his family. But, mostly he was the most amazing husband to my Mom and they were best friends for over 30 years. He was one of the most giving, selfless, humble and kind persons I have ever met.

His fondest memories were of growing up in Iowa, fishing and playing in the Mississippi River, playing football, and he loved his time on the LAPD. In his later years, he loved playing poker and shooting pool. After moving to PA with my Mom, he discovered the Senior Center and loved meeting up with his friends there to shoot pool. He was also a great cook!

I have nothing but the best memories of John, his generosity and selflessness to my Mom and my family. The special care he took with Samantha as a baby and little girl. We love you forever and I like to imagine all of the fun you are having up in Heaven.

He leaves behind his wife Grace Blackmon daughter Tara Wheeler, sons Jeff and John Blackmon, stepdaughter Deborah Cava and Lillian (Lisa) Whang (dec); grandchildren Shanna Lynn Harrison, Ryan Alan Harrison, Aaron Blake Wheeler, Cory Alan Wheeler, Andrew Blackmon, Jack Blackmon; Greatgrandchildren Malia Wheeler, Teagan Wheeler, Gwendolyn Rodreguez
Bronx Rodreguez, and Reese Wheeler.
