The following obituary was composed by Vera’s family:
Vera Sandra Michalczyk was born on September 12, 1930, in Camden, New Jersey, to Anthony and Katherine Galamaga. Although she eventually moved to Philadelphia with her family, Vera remained an enthusiastic student at Camden High, never missing a day of school. After graduation, she completed two years at Drexel University, when she met the love of her life, Joseph Michalczyk, marrying him and joyfully devoting herself to their family of five children.
Vera is deeply missed by Joseph, her husband for 73 years, and their children: Andrea, Carol Filomena (Tony), Maria Palumbo (Dan), John Michalczyk (Ariadne), and Vera McKinney (Dave). She is also remembered with great love by her grandchildren: Tony Filomena, III (Leah), Joseph Filomena, Alexandra Zalasky (Josh), Danny Palumbo, Nicholas Michalczyk, Julia McKinney, Christopher McKinney, and Thomas McKinney, as well as her two great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Anthony Filomena.
Always central to Vera’s life was the Ukrainian Catholic Church. As early members of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, just outside of Philadelphia, Vera and her husband were devoted parishioners of the church, involved in various activities. They raised their children to appreciate the beauty of the Ukrainian tradition and the love of a close family. Vera’s motto was “Above all, remember kindness,” and she modeled this sentiment her entire life. With a gentle, cheerful nature, she loved children, never too tired to play with them, and they in turn were drawn to her, relishing her, too. She loved the ocean and going to the shore. And she loved music, often breaking into joyful song at family gatherings. Her cheerfulness always brought smiles into the world around her. So did her famous baking, particularly her Easter bread (or paska).
After her children were grown, Vera re-entered the work force in the area of insurance. However, when needed, she returned to her family to help care for grandchildren.
She died on May 9, 2025, surrounded by family, in her home in Dresher, Pennsylvania. Her beautiful presence is greatly missed, but her deep faith in God has comforted us all.
Vichnaya pamyat.
(May her memory be eternal.)
Services for Vera will be held by her family at a future time.
