The following obituary was written by Mitch’s family.
In the early morning of December 22, our beloved Mitchell Jules Baker passed peacefully at the age of 87 with his wife and daughter-in-law, Vicky, by his side.
Mitchell was born August 7, 1938 in Philadelphia to the late Sam and Elizabeth Baker and had one younger brother, Lane. Mitchell graduated from Northeast high school in 1956. After graduation, Mitch joined the United States Air Force in 1958 and married his “sweetie pie”, Hilde in 1959. They went on to have two sons, Mitchell and David, two granddaughters (princesses), Erica and Tina, and six great grandsons Willum, Oscar Joseph, Max, Jaxson, and Jason.
Mitchell worked for several computer companies, but his major breakthrough was his job offer from Sonix. While working at Sonix, Mitch was able to work with NASA on the backpacks that were used in the Apollo missions. On July 20, 1969 at 10:56 PM, Mitch watched with his family as Apollo 11’s Neil Armstrong took his first steps onto the moon while wearing the backpack that he worked on. Mitchell was given an award for his work on the backpacks by NASA that only one other recipient received.
In 1994 Mitch and Hilde moved to California for Mitch‘s job where they lived in Orange County for 22 years. While they lived in California, they became Disneyland pass members, worked in Walt Disney’s original building, kept up with all Phillies and Eagles games at their favorite restaurant Philly’s Best, and traveled all throughout the world.
Mitch loved to travel. He was not a very patient man nor did he like to sit still for too long. Traveling quickly became one of the highlights of his life. Throughout their travels, Mitch and Hilde were able to visit all 50 states, over 50+ countries, and made it to six continents. Mitch‘s favorite way of traveling, however, was by cruising. Mitchell would never say no to a good cruise, especially if it served good wine and good food. Even in Mitchell’s final days, he spoke about traveling and brought up many memories that he shared with family and reminisced with his wife and traveling partner.
After many adventures in California, Mitch and Hilde moved back to Pennsylvania in 2016 to be closer to family. Mitch went on to have many new adventures with his family by taking Saturday drives to various locations with his son, being the special story time reader at his great grandson‘s schools, going on a family Disney World trip in 2024, going on the fastest wooden roller coaster with a great grandson at the young age of 83, seeing many great grandsons sports games, seeing two Super Bowl wins by his Philadelphia Eagles, traveling to Rhode Island just to see his oldest great grandson play hockey, and many others!
Mitchell’s pride and Joy, however, was his family history. Mitchell and his granddaughter spent years researching their family history. Mitch was very excited when he found out that his family dated back to pre-Revolutionary times in the US. He was proud to have a family who fought in the American Revolutionary war, fought in the Civil War, fought in the Alamo, had family who became governors, and family who became Texas Rangers. Mitch always said that he was proud to be a son of the American Revolution.
Mitchell will always be remembered by his loved ones as a man who had little words to say, but had a big heart and cared for his family. His family will forever appreciate everything he worked hard for and will forever be thankful for the sacrifices he made for his family and for the adventures they are able to have because of him.
Mitchell had one saying that his family will forever remember and that has been engraved in their minds when it comes to succeeding…”SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT”
In lieu of flowers Mitch‘s wife Hilde requests that you have a nice glass of red California wine, Mitch‘s favorite, in memory of him.
