Born on January 9, 1939 in the small town of Schorndorf, Germany, Werner Sr lived a life marked by hard work, steadfastness, frugality, story telling and an unwavering commitment to independence. His independence began early in life when he decided to leave his homeland of Germany for a better life in Canada at age 18. Eventually, he relocated to Philadelphia in 1963.

Werner was an armed forces veteran and served 2 years in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Beyond his professional life, Werner was passionate about restoring his 1965 Porsche 356 SC, tinkering with projects all around his house, spending weekends in the Pocono Mountains and attending local German social clubs such as the Vereinigung Erzgebirge and Cannstatter. In his earlier days, he loved to play soccer, even during lunch times at work.
