The following was composed by Cheryl’s family:
Cheryl Arlene Standen passed away on June 21, 2026 after a 7 year battle with cancer. Despite losing her husband and mother in those years, she showed resilience, strength and tenacity, always saying how she had so much more love to give.
Cheryl was born on February 6, 1954 to the late Howard Henry Haufler Jr and Arlene Martha Moussette in Abington, PA. As a child Cheryl enjoyed time with her 3 siblings, riding horses and spending summer days in Ocean City, NJ. After graduating from Abington Senior High School, she pursued a degree in Psychology.
She married the late John Arthur Standen III on July 3, 1976 and together they had 44 wonderful years.
She sang her way through life, playing the piano and guitar too, leading Sunday School Classes and Vacation Bible School days. She also shared her immeasurable amounts of energy, care and music as a nursery school teacher and for many years took great pride as a piano teacher to so many.
Cheryl had a persevering and strong faith. She loved encouraging others, laughing, gardening, kayaking on Seneca Lake NY, baking and also enjoyed the quiet of a snowy winter day in PA. Her love language was bread baking and if you’d ever received a loaf, then you were gifted a piece of her heart. Any small act of kindness was rewarded with a loaf of braided bread. Her other love language was sending texts full of capital letters, hearts & emojis and hand crafted songs.
Throughout her life, Cheryl had many titles, but one of her favorites was most certainly MumMum. She was blessed by her 9 and soon to be 10 grandchildren, Brooklin, Emma, Nathanael, Eden, Matthew, Noga, Jeffrey, Abbie, Liam and (August arrival?) of Evelyn. She is also survived by her four children Josh (Jen) Standen, Jaime (Lauren) Standen, Gretchen (Tal) Kollnesher and Ingrid (Caleb) Standen/Mackie; her siblings Kurt Haufler, Dianne McCandless, Wayne Haufler; as well as her many nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
There were dozens of Bible verses that Cheryl quoted throughout her life. However, Isaiah 40:31, a favorite verse of her husband’s, beautifully captures the source of the hope, light, and joy that filled her spirit:
“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.”
A celebration of her abundant life was held at Oreland Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 1119 Church Road Oreland, on Thursday, July 2nd at 10am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made, just as Cheryl so loved to give:
