Irene Loretta (Woehr) Smith, 85, passed away on August 23, 2026, peacefully amongst family. Irene was born January 19, 1941, in Philadelphia, PA, the only daughter of George Christian Woehr, Sr. and Edith Irene Christina Arnold.

Beloved wife of Charles R. Smith of 64 years, mother to Susan (Ken) Groves and Carol (Bill) Hampel; grandmother to Stephanie (John) Cafasso (Groves), Michael (Tina) Groves, Lucas Hampel, Olivia Groves, and Zach Hampel; sister to Richard (Jeanette) Woehr. Cherished aunt of four nieces: Andrea (Matt) Putnam (Woehr), Eileen (Late Chris) Carter (Woehr), Helene McMillan (Woehr), and Janine (Michael) Manuele (Woehr).

She is predeceased by her brother George Woehr and his wife Pam, as well as her brother-in-law Harry Smith.

Irene was a secretarial assistant at Nabisco for over 9 years until starting a family. She held numerous roles within the church, was a devoted Deacon of many years and enjoyed being a part of the Women’s Association. She was regularly active in her daughters’ elementary school PTA over the years and is fondly remembered for chaperoning school trips, working at the book fairs and holiday tables.

Irene loved being a grandmother and not only helped raise all five of her grandchildren but went out of her way to ensure each one felt special and was given her individual attention. You could always find her at the top of the bleachers cheering on the football, lacrosse or baseball games of her grandsons, playing dolls and doing makeup with her granddaughters, sitting outside watching them riding bikes, playing board games, taking all to play mini-golf, bowling, to the movies or to the playground and simply making their days fun with water ice, ice cream and McDonald’s treats. She would bring them little trinkets and toys with each visit and would fill everyone’s Christmas stocking each year with the same odd/fun items. As the grandchildren got older, she would stay in touch by writing them letters and then ultimately e-mails each week. She loved sending letters to friends and family, watching detective shows, and talking with neighbors.

She always put family and friends first whether it was to help by driving someone to an appointment or sitting with someone who needed a friend. She will be remembered most for her beautiful eyes, her love of reminiscing and her outgoing kindness to all.

Memorial donations may be made in Irene’s name to the First Presbyterian Church of Olney at 5435 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19120.

Services will be private.
