Raymond Paul “Ray” Mayer, of Rydal, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at the age of 79.
Born on September 18, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ray was the beloved son of the late William P. Mayer and Mabel Mayer (née Niethammer). Raised in Rockledge, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Abington High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Army. Ray served honorably and was discharged in 1972.
Shortly after returning home, Ray met the love of his life, Kathleen, on a blind date arranged by her Aunt Annie. What began as a chance introduction grew into a devoted partnership that would span more than five decades. They were married in 1973 in Kathleen’s hometown of Hammonton, New Jersey, and built a life centered on love, family, and unwavering commitment to one another.
A talented machinist by trade, Ray took great pride in his work and dedicated much of his life to the craft. In the mid-1990s, he realized a lifelong dream of business ownership when he purchased Peter J. Salmon Co. Through hard work, perseverance, and determination, he successfully led the company for many years before retiring at the age of 74.
Ray believed in making the most of every day and rarely sat still for long. Whether tackling a project, lending a helping hand, or enjoying a trip to the casino, he approached life with energy, purpose, and a strong work ethic that inspired those around him. Above all, Ray cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Kathleen Mayer; his loving daughters, Michele Mayer and Lisa Breslin (John Breslin Jr.) and his treasured grandsons, Connor and Aiden, who lovingly knew him as “Pop-Pop.”
He is also survived by his sisters, Alice Paci, Virginia Ohntrup, Marie Donlon, and Doris Deporter, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will miss him dearly. In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his sisters, Emma Gambacorta, Mabel Teske, and Dolores Graefe, and by his brother, William Mayer.
Ray will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his dedication to his work, his quiet strength, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew and loved him.
Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on Thursday, August 6, 2026 from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. and funeral service at 11:00 A.M. at Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 419 Huntingdon Pike, Rockledge, PA 19046. Interment will take place at a later date.
Religious services will be conducted by Rev. Owen Griffiths.
