Evelyn Hoopes Miller died Friday July 31, 2026. Eve was pre-deceased by her devoted husband Richards Galt Miller, her parents, Emily Sydney Hawkins Murphey and William Rhoads Murphey Jr. and her brother William Rhoads Murphey III. She is survived by her loving children, Richards Galt Miller Jr. of Waterbury VT., Margaret Hoopes Miller Class of Dresher, PA and Sydney Grayson Miller Fox of Stockton, NJ and 8 grandchildren, Richards, Galt Miller III, Tanya Cecelia Miller, Carl Frederick. Class V, Patricia Rhoads Class Gallagher, Emily Sydney Fox, Sara Mullin Fox Harron, Noah Balfour Fox and Key Richards Fox McPherson and 12 great-grandchildren. Eve’s passion for her family has been enjoyed and shared by 5 generations. There was nothing she loved more than spending time with her children and grandchildren and that passion has been passed down to succeeding generations.
Eve lived her entire life in Germantown, Chestnut Hill and Wyndmoor Pennsylvania before moving with her husband Dick to Foulkeways in Gwynedd in 1999.
She graduated from Germantown Friends School in 1941 and went on to graduate from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts in 1945 with a degree in education and psychology.
During the 2nd world war Eve’s desire to help others exhibited itself in the war effort where she worked on assembly line making batteries along her dear friend Patty.
Together with a partner, Eve and Dick have been co-owners of Quaker State Plantations, a major grower of Pennsylvania Christmas trees since 1962. She returned to GFS as Alumni secretary from 1960-1974.
Foulkeways offered Eve many opportunities to continue her service to others. She immersed herself in activities at Foulkeways, serving as a member of the welcoming committee, as a hospice volunteer, singing in their choir and performing in their shows. In her roles she exhibited her hysterical sense of humor.
Eve was a exceptional athlete. She loved tennis, skiing, sailing and any sport with a racket. At 88 years old she was still able to play an competitive game of tennis.
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Chestnut Hill was a very important part of her life. She was a life long parishioner. She was a choir member, volunteered in the parish office, ran the Christmas greens sale with Dick, she was head of the women’s auxiliary, she served on the vestry as well as on several Search committees, and for years helped sort for the annual church rummage sale.
Eve’s memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Chestnut Hill on Saturday September, 26th at 11:00 AM.
